Some of our favorites have come out with new records recently.  A lot of the songs are so good that I can’t decide which ones to play on the show.

Owen, one of our favorites, has a new album coming out September 22.  The album, New Leaves, is packed with beautiful arrangements and the honest lyrics we’ve come to appreciate from Mike Kinsella.  I played “Scared To Move” on the show.  Listen to the strings during the second verse.  It’s really beautiful.

I also played “The Field” by Mason Jennings from his new album, Blood of Man. The album, his second for Jack Johnson’s Brushfire imprint, was recorded in a cabin where Jennings holed himself up and recorded the album himself.

The song tells a pretty heavy story.  His stories are one of the main reasons he’s awesome.

A man invited my friends and I into his home when I was in Gainesville two weeks ago.  He had hand crafted all kinds of crazy things and was setting up a recording studio in his home.  He gave me an album by Patrick David Koch, one of his buddies.  The album is awesome.  It’s mostly upbeat, acoustic guitar-driven, tunes with cool vocal melody lines.  I played “Mine and Yours” from Recipe.

Rachel Goodrich is a singer-songwriter from Miami, FL.  Danielle and I had an opportunity to see her play at New World Brewery earlier this year.  She can play her instrument, for sure.  Her music is different, but catchy all in one listen.  She has a great voice and a trippy backing band.  They play it all from toy xylophones to kazoos.  If she ever makes it to your neck of the woods, you should check her out.  I played “Piggy Bank” from Tinker Toys.  Listen to the sweet kazoo action.

I managed to squeeze in some Violent Femmes who do “Gone Daddy Gone” on the show today.   Gnarls Barkley covered this song on their debut album, St. Elsewhere.

If you thought Bright Eyes’ Conor Oberst was only capable of slow, sappy songs, then check out “Roosevelt Room” from his latest recording with the Mystic Valley Band.  It is a rocker, and it’s good.

There are also some awesome tunes from bands that I hadn’t checked out like: Kid Cudi, Alberta Cross, Japandroids, and Swollen Members.

I’m back from the dead.  I know it’s a long time between July and September.  I apologize to both you and myself for the absence.  I explain the reason for my departure during the show, so we won’t waste your time here.

So much music has been listened to over the past two months, and it will take me a few shows to share it all with you.  The Beatles had a big week this week with the release of their newly re-mastered catalog.

Jack Johnson does a live cover of “Rocky Raccoon” from the White Album. It was recorded during one of his opening sets for either Mason Jennings or Ben Harper.  Can you believe Jack Johnson used to be just the opening act for people?

I also played a Yoko Ono song today as well.  It is probably the only song that I can stand listening to on Plastic Ono Band. I wanted to hear her music, but I couldn’t make it through the entire album.  John Lennon plays bass on the song.  Let me know what you guys think.  Avant-garde or Avant-crap?

I’ve been really lucky to stumble upon two awesome bands: Fruit Bats and Passion Pit.  The former is led by The Shins’ keyboardist Eric Johnson; however, he was part of Fruit Bats before he joined The Shins for their 2007 album Wincing the Night Away. On the Fruit Bats song “Singing Joy to the World,” Johnson tells a beautiful love story and name drops Prince and Three Dog Night.  Hopefully I can play the mentioned songs on a future show.

Some people have given me a lot of slack for liking Passion Pit.  Nevertheless, their song “Little Secrets” rocks.  Listening to their album on some solid headphones will make you dance like an idiot – guaranteed.

We also folked you up with Odetta.  She sings about all of this great food on “Midnight Special.”  Paul Thorn plays WMNF’s 30^th birthday party this Saturday, Sept. 12, 2009.  It will be at the Ritz Theatre in Ybor.  I played a live cut from one of his albums.

I used to work security at The Ritz when it was called The Masquerade.  (Oddly enough it was originally known as the Ritz) It was the best job I ever had because I got to watch national headliners from the side of the stage and made friends with locals.  One of those locals was Glory of This, a hardcore band from Pensacola.  I played their song “More Often Than Not” on the program today.

Hello everyone,

            Today’s show cannot be missed.  I was very privileged to have Mr. Mike Hugus share some tunes with us in the studio last week.  From the very first note of “The Sound” by Human Highway, I knew the show was going to be awesome.  We even went into overtime – clocking in at over 1 hour and 20 minutes.

            We managed to squeeze in Fleet Foxes, a band that I have been trying to find and get on the show forever.  I especially liked Neutral Milk Hotel, Woods, and Band of Horses; however, if I took this playlist into a record store, I could definitely spend some serious money.    Since I don’t I have any money, I’ll stay away.

            It was very refreshing to have someone else come in and bring tunes, so look forward to hearing more of Mike’s picks in the near future.  Thank you for listening.

Hey everyone,

            Thanks for taking the time to read this and listen to the show.  Taking more time in between shows has proven to be fruitful.  There is more new music (or new to me at least) on the show than ever before.

            There is going to be an awesome show in Ybor City this Friday.  Van* Gloria will be playing at the New World Brewery.  Best of all, the show is free.  It will cost you nothing to get in the door and check out this awesome band from Miami.  I played “Sinking Suspicion” from their latest release, Bluebird.  This band takes their time to make sure everything sounds perfect on tape, so the show should be very awesome.  I will see you all out there.

            The situation in Iran is nuts, and there is a Ben Harper songs that really reminds of what is going on.  I played “People Lead” from his album Fight For Your Mind, which is awesome.

            You also get some of The Roots, who is now the house band for Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.  I found a track from Game Theory with a minimal amount of expletives so you get the song “False Media” on the program today.

            The Avett Brothers are playing The Cuban Club in July.  It is a make-up show for a gig they were supposed to do earlier this year.  It should be an awesome show.  Hopefully, it hasn’t sold out yet.  I played their song “Die Die Die” from Emotionalism on the program today.

            Rounding out the program were Muddy Waters and Mofro.  The Muddy Waters song, “My Home Is The Delta” features a young Buddy Guy on guitar with Muddy.  Buddy is so mellow on this CD, that it’s hard to believe that it’s really him.  The re-mastered version of Muddy Waters: Folk Singer is amazing.  You can really hear Waters’ deep voice booming through your speakers.

Waters once covered a song called “I Got My Mojo Workin” by Ann Cole, and Mofro offers up their version of the tune on a live cut recorded at Skipper’s Smokehouse here in Tampa.  If you haven’t been to a show at the Skipperdome, do yourself a favor, and get out there.  The place is one of Tampa’s gems.  Plus the food is awesome.

            The Razor Sharpe Radio Show is on the ropes.  I think I can only keep up with this thing twice a month, but that should result in more new music from different genres.

            We had two special guests on the show this week.  Obie and Laura Sullivan were gracious enough to wake up early and join me in the studio for an hour.  They are newlyweds.  Manos and I played some music at their wedding.  We played their wedding march, “All I Want Is You” by Barry Louis Polisar on the show today.

    EC was kind enough to let us use his time slot to have our program, and for that we are very grateful.

            We kicked it off with our boy Xaiver Rudd playing a mean didgeridoo on “G.B.A.”, you can even hear him gasping for air at the end.  After hearing Kevin Devine cover “American Hearts” on a live recording, I decided to pick up some A.A. Bondy at the store.  I am delighted.

            Bondy, whose real name is Augeste Arthur, recorded American Hearts in a barn in New York.  He has the most awesome voice, but plays an even better guitar.  The arrangements are quiet, but they hold your attention very well.  I couldn’t decide which song to play because there are so many good ones on the record.  You get to hear “Black Rain, Black Rain” which has a beautiful riff.

            I know that I’m late on the Gnarls Barkley train, but I finally found a used copy of St. Elsewhere and had to play two songs for you guys.  I also played a short and sweet song by Rogue Wave called “Medicine Ball.”

            I played John Legend because he gave an awesome commencement speech at the University of Pennsylvania a few weeks ago.  You should really do yourself a favor and try to find that on YouTube or something.

            You can probably tell that I am just doing the show ay any point during the week.  My goal is to still keep doing it once a week.  Thank you for taking the time to read this and listen.  It means a lot.  I can’t say that enough.

            This week’s show is action packed.  For some reason, even when I think I don’t have any more songs to share, I manage to find something I love to share.

 Waylon Jennings made last week awesome for me, and I shared a song he recorded with you.  He formed a group with Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, and Kris Kristofferson called The Highwaymen.  Hopefully I can get around to listening to a CD that was handed off to me so I can get some Highwaymen on for you soon.  For now you get a song about cowboys since we all have a little bit of cowboy in us, right?

There is a cover of Britney Spears’ “Toxic” by Yael Naim.  Naim is an Israeli-born Parisian whose self-titled debut is definitely worth checking out.  She has a great voice and even sings in Hebrew and French on the record.

            There is a little “Did-you-know?” segment after “Epistrophy” by The Thelonius Monk Quartet with John Coltrane.  You will be schooled – or not. There is some Bo Diddley, 2pac, Outkast, and an awesome OK Go song mixed in there too.

            Other than that, the rest are songs that I think are either really pretty, catchy, fun, meaningful, danceable, or any combination thereof, so please enjoy and don’t hesitate to contact me if you want to hear anything or tell me whatever.  Pass it on to your friends who may like this, and have a good week.

The Razor Sharpe Radio show is back after a week off.  School let out and I’ve been trying to work more, so I haven’t been in the studio to do the show in a couple of weeks.  You can tell I’m rusty if you listen to the show; however, while the announcing may be lackluster the tunes definitely aren’t.

Two weeks ago, a good friend told me a story about John Wayne Gacy Jr., and it completely freaked me out.  Sufjan Stevens’ song titled “John Wayne Gacy Jr.” is a beautiful composition.  It may even be my favorite Sufjan song, but now it takes on creepy undertones.

I tell the whole story in the show, but to summarize, Gacy Jr. was a serial killer who murdered over 30 young men and boys in the 1970’s.  He buried them in the crawl space under his house.  He was known as the “Killer Clown” because he dressed up as a clown during neighborhood parties.  Listen to the story in the show and tell me if the song doesn’t freak you out.

For those who loved and miss The Format, frontman Nate Reuss, has created a new band, Fun, with members of Steel Train and Anathallo.  Fun are opening up for Manchester Orchestra at the Orpheum in Ybor City on June 2.  I played a demo of Fun’s song “Benson Hedges” on the show today.

Other than that, I love all of the songs I played today, especially “Big Trucks” by Pedro the Lion, which has a great groove and melody.

It is amazing how these playlists together come together, and I’m really lucky to able to do this every week.  I am even luckier to be able to share these weekly mixtapes with you.  I’ve spent the last few hours studying for a test that I am taking at 1p.m. today, and I was worried if today’s show would be any good.  Thankfully, I have been able to put something together that I’m very proud to share with you guys.

Australian singer/songwriter Missy Higgins put together a pretty swell disc called On a Clear Night.  Almost every song is brilliant, and she has a really nice voice.  I played “Where I Stood,” the lead track on the album, because it is a great post-love song that is about love of the everlasting variety.

Kevin Devine, who we obviously love on the show, has a new CD out tomorrow.  Although the album leaked on the Internet – two months before it’s release date – Brother’s Blood will probably be the album that puts KD on the map for real.

During his opening slot on the last Manchester Orchestra tour he and his Goddamn Band played cuts from the album and absolutely stole the show.  Whether you pick up the album or not, do not miss his headlining show at the next Tuesday, May 5, because it may be the last time you can see him in a small setting like the Orpheum.  You might even pick up a copy of the album.

Ray LaMontagne is coming to the Tampa Theatre this Wednesday, April 29.  The show is sold out, so you’ll have to go to StubHub if you want to go to this one.  Thankfully, Danielle bought us some tickets.  Ray is awesome, and his voice is fun to listen to because it is so soulful and earnest.  He tells great stories in his songs and keeps it very simple.  He reminds me why I’d rather be blind than deaf.

I played a song called “Lost & Found” by Passion.  He is a very gifted young man from San Francisco with a great message and a huge following on the Internet.

I even played a special song that was recorded live in the City by the Bay. In June 1969 the Jimi Hendrix Experience broke up; however, on New Year’s Eve of that year his new band – The Gypsys – played a badass set at the Fillmore that was captured on tape.  It became the only live recording that was authorized before Jimi died.  His drummer Buddy Miles, who died in 2008, wrote and sang a song called “Them Changes,” that I played on the show today.  It’s pretty cool.

Hey.  How y’all doin out there?  That’s good to hear.  Thank you so much for taking the time to even read this and thanks to everyone taking it further and listening to the show.  I really appreciate it.

I found a clean copy of a song by A Tribe Called Quest, so you get to hear Separate/Together off their album Beats, Ryhmes, & Life.  I picked up a lot of new music this week and I’m very happy to share the songs with you today.

Ani DiFranco is weird, but she can play the damn guitar like a champion.  I played “Way Tight” from her newest release Red Letter Year.  She put a nice little composition together on this track. 

The new Mastodon album is pretty sweet too.  Metal is not my preferred genre of music, but after reading an article about the band and their singer, Brent Hinds’, coma leading him to write the album, and seeing his awesome forehead tattoo, I had to check it out.  There is an awesome song called “The Last Baron” that I couldn’t play due to length, but it’s worth checking out.  Instead, you get the title track off Crack The Skye.  The article in Rolling Stone is definitely worth checking out too.

I told a little story about Ms. Janis Joplin and Mr. Kris Kristofferson towards the end of the show as well.

An awesome show is coming to the Orpheum tomorrow.  Person L will be opening up for Mae along with Barcelona and Tokyo.  I’m a big fan of both Mae and Person L.  Person L have been recording in Lakeland with Copeland’s Aaron Marsh and a new album is on the horizon.
